"My name is Zohra":
a graphic narrative
During 2021 and 2022, I interviewed Afghan women who had travelled through Serbia en route to the EU, and had been pregnant or given birth while 'on the move' in Serbia.
Each woman I interviewed relayed a unique story, but drawing on common threads running through their experiences, as well as impressions from field visits to Serbia, I created one composite narrative, "My name is Zohra". Shae White, from the Real Birth Company, brought this narrative to life with her artistic skills, and a number of Afghan women whom I had interviewed gave their feedback. This graphic narrative brings to life the realities of maternity and motherhood for Afghan women, while negotiating the EU border regime.
With enormous thanks to the women who shared their stories with me.
